Commission holds first meeting

July 18, 2007

Commission-1

The commission held its first full meeting and stakeholder event in London on July 24. Sustainable development representatives from the Greater London Authority (GLA), the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) addressed the commissioner meeting at Holloway Road.

During the afternoon, the commission briefed key environmental, social and economic stakeholders on its role and framework for providing assurance over the sustainability and legacy of the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. Stakeholders were asked for their views about the commission’s direction and priorities for 2007, which is focused on addressing some of the cross-cutting themes of climate change, waste, biodiversity, inclusion and healthy living, along with key processes such as procurement and design arrangements.

The commission’s first piece of reporting, which will review the governance arrangements in place to support a sustainable games and legacy, will be provided to the Olympic Board in the Autumn.

In addition, new commissioners are expected to be appointed by Autumn, to ensure the commission’s membership includes climate change, waste, biodiversity, economic development, sports and host borough representatives.
