The residual footprint should be mitigated using a variety of techniques: Creation of a fund to support carbon reducing projects that also support social/economic objectives locally and around the world. This fund could be supported by commercial partners if appropriate and possibly from a voluntary carbon contribution linked to games and transport tickets. Collection and distribution must be transparent.

The Olympic Board did not chose to implement this option for mitigation of the carbon footprint. Some commercial partners are setting up funds or schemes for offsetting their emissions. The BP Target Neutral scheme offers all spectators the chance to offset their travel emissions at no cost to themselves, which could provide a significant contribution to offsetting emissions. The ODA is supporting local offsite carbon reduction projects for delivering their carbon reduction target shortfall, through the GLA RE:NEW and RE:FIT schemes. None of the formal offset schemes are designed to tackle the embodied carbon footprint of the Games. Closed
