Recommendation

The London 2012 Sustainability Group should reduce carbon at source as much as possible and honour the commitment to offset flights for competitors and officials with Gold Standard offsets. The remaining footprint should be mitigated by a combination of initiatives to reduce carbon in the community and through wider influencing schemes using the inspirational power of the Games to change behaviour. Legacy standards should address embodied impacts.

The carbon management strategy was published via the 2009 Sustainability Plan. It sets out the steps that have been and are to be taken to reduce carbon at source. It also sets out how the inspirational power of the Games is to be used to mitigate the remaining carbon. Gold standard offsetting of flights for competitors and officials is not to be taken forward, nor are there specific commitments at present to reduce carbon in the community. Legacy activities are more focussed on reducing the carbon intensity of the lifestyle of legacy communities and not embodied carbon in the development.
