Recommendation

That LOCOG contract management processes include effective assurance at point of delivery to ensure that all timber and timber products adhere to their sustainable sourcing requirements.

LOCOG required all timber and timber products to be FSC certified or have an equivalent chain of custody. For products this was tracked by the logistics team when it came through their warehouses and also through site audits. For temporary venues and overlay this was tracked by the principal contractor and through site audits by LOCOG. We observed the processes for this and steps taken to manage timber and timber products. The main challenges occurred with timber products where there are often broken chains of custody so tracking and securing the appropriate documentation proved difficult. There is a need for greater education of the industry to address this. In some cases LOCOG changed the products it was planning to source to enable the commitment to 100% sustainable timber to be met. Complete

Progress Made

As LOCOG has required that all timber and timber products will be FSC certified or will be expected to have an equivalent chain of custody it will benefit from having a document trail to be tracked and monitored. For products this is due to be done by the logistics team where it comes through their warehouses and also through site audits. For temporary venues and overlay this is due to be tracked by the principal contractor and through site audits by LOCOG. This can be a fairly resource intensive process and in order to minimise the risk of non compliant timber being used. We have had some concerns about LOCOG's ability to manage this across the programme but having raised this we have recently seen evidence of tracking systems be put in place. Progress Made
