Recommendation

That LOCOG test the full Games-time waste and catering solutions during at least one event prior to the Games.

History

Status at 31 Mar 2013

Not Achieved

LOCOG tested the Games-time waste plans along with some elements of the catering packaging at their May Olympic Park test events. The packaging was also tested in composting facilities. LOCOG did not test the full integrated solution. If greater pre-Games testing of the combined catering-waste system had occurred it may have helped to iron out some of the food packaging waste challenges experienced during the Games. For example, this may have assisted in minimising the problems encountered early in the Games with contamination of the compostable waste stream. LOCOG achieved the target of zero to landfill and achieved an impressive 62% reuse, recycling and composting figure. Further minimising any rejected loads due to contamination of compostable materials could have raised this even further. Not Achieved

Significant Risk

LOCOG tested the Games-time waste plans along with some elements of the catering packaging at their May Olympic Park test events. The packaging is also being tested in composting facilities. Having not tested the full integrated solution leaves open a risk for Games-time which the Commission has raised with LOCOG and the London 2012 Sustainability Group. Significant Risk
